Three Sisters – A New Painting

Why do I bother to post my painting process? Well, my hope is that it will inspire.

While studying ancient Greece with my kids they asked me, “Mom, if you were a Greek goddess – which one would you want to be?” I answered this question quickly because I’ve always known the answer – I’d want to be one of the Muses. The Muses were the personification of the arts and it was their job to inspire writers, artists and heroes.

I always hope that by sharing my painting process it might somehow inspire someone out there to pick up a pencil, brush, charcoal, crayon – or whatever – and create. πŸ™‚

The Three Sisters is a trio of peaks located near Canmore, Alberta. It was these peaks that my client requested I paint.

This was one of the images shared with me by my client and it became my main source of inspiration for this piece.

I often do a small sketch to establish a good composition but I also keep the photo close at hand as well.

In this case I started with the sky – my client had requested that I paint this piece similar to some of my older ones. The lined swirly sky and stylized trees are quickly becoming signature in my work.

The above shot shows where I got stuck. Yes, sometimes I get stuck. πŸ˜‰ I was struggling with how to fit such an immense image and idea onto a smaller 18″ x 24″ canvas. I gave up and left the painting behind for a few days. When I returned to the piece I was refreshed and found that I could think through it more clearly.

Sometimes it is best to not push – a little space and time can help bring a new outlook.

It was far easier to move forward now.

Stylized lines are often the last step for me in most of my pieces but once I reached this point I felt like the painting needed a bit more depth. So I added some richer tones throughout.

I always find that photographs never really do the final piece justice – I promise it’s a 100% better in person!

I hope you are all enjoying your Canada day weekend!
