Photographing Star Trails – A Lesson Learned

I’m back on the photo challenge track! Last week’s draw was ‘Lesson Learned’, submitted by Stephanie. My first inspiration after reading this challenge was to learn something new.

I’ve always admired all those talented photographers out there who create beautiful nighttime images of star trails but, I really had no idea how they did it… So this past week I did my research (you gotta love You Tube) and I learned everything that I needed to know about photographing star trails. And then I waited… and waited… and waited…. (It’s rare to get a clear night in the winter.)Β Finally on Monday evening the clouds cleared up a little and I headed outside to photograph the stars. Part way through the procedure though I realized that there was still plenty of clouds hiding up in that big dark sky and they were fuzzing across my view finder and ruining my beautiful trails. (Lesson learned. πŸ˜‰ ) In the end I had to give up. Below is my failed attempt…Β  However, I promise that I’ll keep a watchful eye out for a truly clear night and I’ll have another go at this challenge.

Trails

My half-finished/failed attempt at star trails. (See all those pesky invasive clouds floating by!?)

I did manage to take a couple fun nighttime shots in our front yard though. πŸ™‚IMG_0786

Thanks again to Stephanie for submitting this challenge – I will make it up to you!!!
Check back in with me tomorrow and I’ll draw next week’s challenge. πŸ™‚

Happy Wednesday!
