3 Reasons Why Every Artist Can Benefit From Study Sketches

I try hard to create a study sketch before each painting, it doesn’t always happen but I find that when it does, my painting process always flows better. Below are a few reasons why I believe sketching assists in any creative project.

#1 The first, and most obvious reason, is that drawing anything on a regular basis keeps you limbered up to create. The more you can draw, the better everything you do on canvas (or board, or paper, or sculpture) becomes.

#2 Second, drawing/sketching is a meditative process similar in fact to the colouring rage going on right now. It is a contemplative act – a quiet, still process of working through and planning your final piece. Study sketches are an opportunity to think through your moves, your colours and your composition before you even touch your brush to the canvas or your tools to the clay.

#3 And third, sometimes the final piece comes out altogether different from your original sketch. You may realize that sections (or the whole thing for that matter) have not worked.  Hence, you may need to rethink the idea or even decide to not create it at all. Possibly the subject matter wasn’t quite what you had hoped and now you’ve saved yourself a great deal of time, money and materials!

Here are a few study sketches I did this past week – all intended to become paintings in the near future (as long as my back cooperates 😉 ). I included the original photo inspirations for you as well – all local captures by my talented photographer friend, Cheryl Jaggers. Hope you found this post useful and inspiring –  have a lovely and creative week my friends! 12698161_1977150099176275_5860052389952852434_o 12662586_10153793129027279_1310244314012443976_n12694621_1979245695633382_6191391356536668303_o11068082_10153080964562279_4273648256550323197_n
