If you’ve been following along you’ll know that I’ve never actually painted birds until the last few months… I received my first bird commission at Christmas time and directly after posting that finished piece I received the request for this commission you see here.
Shortly after saying yes I felt intimidated – what was I thinking?!?
This commission was for four separate 12″ x 16″ paintings – my client wanted one bird for each season of the year. The first painting (and even a little bit of the second) was a struggle. However, I fought through and by the time I got to the third piece I started to feel more confident. (Coincidentally the third one – the fall chickadee – is my favourite.)
Anyway, I’m sure it’s much more fun to look through the paintings than to listen to me carry on – thanks for popping by – here’s hoping you enjoy these!
This was my preliminary sketch – I think I stayed pretty true to it actually.
The first of four! I was happy when this was completed – it was my greatest battle.
‘Seasonal Feathers Spring’ – acrylic on canvas – 12″ x 16″
‘Seasonal Feathers Summer’ – acrylic on canvas – 12″ x 16″
‘Seasonal Feathers Fall’ – acrylic on canvas – 12″ x 16″
‘Seasonal Feathers Winter’ – acrylic on canvas – 12″ x 16″
Last year was the year of birdie painting commissions and this year is the year of horse painting commissions. I had THREE horse portrait commissions this Christmas and all of them were requested in different styles.
I know that some artists hate commission work but I am a freak… Initially I panic and then the thrill kicks in because I LOVE challenges! My husband always says that I make things hard on myself and push too much… I. MUST. GO. BEYOND. Ha ha! (Maybe it’s like an adrenaline junkie thing – minus the bungie cord.) 😉
I hope you enjoy these paintings though they are very different from my usuals… Don’t despair though I have a heap of landscapes up my sleeve for this coming year – I’ve been asked to put some into a beautiful little cafe in town. And possibly I’ll be working towards my own showing in the fall of 2016 – these are both great incentive to work -work WORK!
The first of four seasons of birds. I’ll be honest, I’ve never painted birds before until the last few months – so this is a WHOLE new experience. My clients are determined to challenge me! 😉
Apparently people like birds… 😉
Just received a new commission request last night – here is the preliminary sketch. It will be painted on four individual canvases. I think the idea is really fun!
In 2010 my family and I purchased a plot of farm land in beautiful British Columbia and we daily enjoy the gift that it is to live here. We raise pigs, meat birds and laying hens – all of which we harvest and sell locally. In addition to our harvest animals we have barn cats, a loveable pooch and a couple of horses. I love gardening and although I sometimes wish that I had more time to focus in this area I do manage to plant and harvest enough goodies to get the four of us most of the way through the winter. And I just can’t resist flowers so I putter away at a couple flower beds out front and enjoy their colourful displays throughout the summer. I’m sure as time goes by you’ll see more of our little farm pictured here but for now I just wanted to share a little bit of the beauty (and cuteness) – I hope you enjoy! 🙂
I’m leaving you with a crazy collage of images from our home and a bit of craziness from me and mine as well. 😉
Thanks for stopping by!
