I’m an artist with far too many interests! I particularly love acrylic painting, photography and illustration but I dabble in numerous other creative endeavours as well.
I was one of those kids, you know the ones, they never put their pencils down. My parents spent a fortune on art supplies and then inconspicuously trashed the accumulating “masterpieces” one at a time. (It’s okay, I forgive them now that I have two budding artists of my own.) 😉
When I grew up I knew exactly what I wanted to do – go to art school! I attended the University of Victoria for five years and graduated with my BFA in 1995. It’s never easy being a starving artist so I applied the photography skills I gained in University and began a portrait and wedding photography business. This little business was my bread and butter for 15 years and I am forever grateful for that income and experience!
In 2011 I closed my photography business. I wanted to free up more time for my family and more time for art of all kinds. This blog is an opportunity to share some of what I create with others. A dear friend suggested the name, ‘Mish Mash’, unbeknownst to her it was a nickname I had as a kid. I decided to use the name because it said so much in a catchy and memorable way.
While I don’t have an “official” studio space yet, I do have a large dining room with lots of light – my husband and two teens willingly share this space and allow me to paint there. My inspiration comes from everywhere but I especially love to paint from photographs..
I am slowly developing a new outlook on photography. After 15 years of portrait and wedding photography I am trying to switch gears. I want to explore this medium in a new way and I’m excited to see what will happen!
In addition to painting and photography I also do illustration. I co-own a company called ‘Whimsical Publishing‘, and in the fall of 2011 we released our first children’s book, Miss Emily Goes to Bat. We also released two children’s colouring books in the fall of 2013 as well. And in the evenings I like to “rest” but my form of resting usually involves either knitting, crochet or sewing, depending on my mood. I share free patterns and tutorials along with my personal fibre journey on my blog: Mish Mash Knits.
Thanks for visiting here – I’m so honoured that you came! I currently have numerous paintings available for sale and I am also available for art commission work of all kinds so please contact me with your requests and ideas – I’d love to hear from you!
